Indian Medical Association is the only representative voluntary organization of Doctors of Modern Scientific System of Medicine, which looks after the interest of doctors as well as the well being of the community at large.
The Association was started in 1928 on the occasion of the 5th all India Medical Conference at Calcutta with the avowed objectives:
Today, I.M.A is a well established organization with is Headquarters at Delhi and State/Terr. Branches in 23 States and 9 union Territories. It has over 78000 doctors as its members through over 1274 local branches spread all over the country.

IMA is the founder member of the WORLD MEDICAL ASSOCIATION (WMA), which was founded in the year 1946
IMA had organized III World Medical Conference on medical education in collaboration with WMA in 1966 and World Medical Conference in 2009. Dr. A.K.N. Sinha, past president of IMA became the president of WMA.
IMA conducts academic activities through its academic wings IMA College of General Practitioners (IMA CGP) and IMA Academy of Medical Specialties (IMA AMS). IMA confers fellowships to its senior members in both the IMA CGP and IMA AMS. After proper examinations and scrutiny, Fellowship of IMA College of General Practitioners (FCGP) and IMA Academy of Medical Specialties (FIAMS) are conferred to the deserving members.
IMA has been rendering yeoman's services in the field of health care delivery, disease control and eradication. Its services to the community during natural calamities like earthquakes, droughts, floods, famines and epidemics in our country have been highly lauded and appreciated.
IMA is actively involved in the formulation and implementation of National Health Programme e.g., Family Welfare, Maternal and Child Health, Oral Rehydration Therapy, AIDS Prevention and Control, RNTCP, Immunization, Polio Eradication, RCH and Blood Banks, Ambulance Services etc.
The affairs of IMA are managed by elected office bearers, members of the central council (CC) and central working committee (CWC). CC meets once in a year and CWC meets thrice in a year.
State branches and local branches organize their own annual conferences and CME programme.
IMA publishes a monthly scientific journal named JIMA, which is mailed to all registered members free of cost. Apart from JIMA, IMA also publishes two health magazines namely YOUR HEALTH in English and AAPKA SWASTHYA in Hindi for common public.
IMACGP and IMAAMS also have their own publications and many books have been published for the members.
IMA organizes STUDY TOURS within the country and abroad for its members. Members of IMA are entitled to stay in IMA Guest Houses located in various cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangaluru, Patna, Varanasi, Ahmedabad, Tirupati, Cuttuck etc.
On behalf of Govt. of India and World Health Organization (WHO), IMA conducts various training programme, e.g., Physicians' Training for management of HIV/AIDS, MDR Tuberculosis, No-scalpel Vasectomy, Swine Flu etc., in state level.
IMA has various Social Security Schemes, Family Welfare Schemes and Benevolent Funds etc. for the benefits of its members.
IMA AKN SINHA INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL EDUCATION conducts a number of distant learning courses on various subjects, e.g., Torture Medicine, cardiology, Dialectology, ECG, Pediatrics, Population Control, Family Medicine etc. for its members. All these courses are of six months duration and after successful completion of the courses a certificate is awarded.
IMA also conducts various Paramedical Courses, e.g., DLT, X-Ray Technician, OT Assistant, ECG Technician etc. which are of great demand.
IMA organizes ALL INDIA MEDICAL CONFERENCE every year from 26 to 29 December in different places of India. This year (2011) it is being organized in Bangaluru.
IMA AMS and IMA CGP organize their annual conference along with convocation for the fellows.
IMA is a forum for FRIENDSHIP, LEARNING, FAMILY GET-TOGETHER, FAMILY PROTECTION, PROFESSIONAL PROTECTION, HEALTH INSURANCE and INTERNATIONAL PEACE & PROSPERITY.
